On September 24 2016, alpaca owners from across the United States and Canada will invite the public to come to their farm or ranch to meet their alpacas and learn more about these inquisitive, unique animals, the luxury fiber they produce, and why raising alpacas and alpaca fiber products are perfect for environmentally conscious individuals! On September 24th, from 10 am to 4 pm, 2 Point Farm will welcome guests to meet their herd of Suri Alpacas, learn about their care and the many uses for their amazing fiber.
2 Point Farm sits on 118 acres of farmland in Dry Ridge, KY in Grant County and is named for the two ridges that frame the property and for our first farm purchase, a “2 point plow”. In 2013, alpacas were the livestock of choice based on their earth friendly qualities and peaceful nature. The herd was started with a focus on the distinguished and rare Suri alpaca known for its silky and lustrous fleece. Today, the herd numbers 21, including 3 crias (babies) born in September. The farm focuses on using alpaca fleece in a variety of products including socks, gloves, scarves, hats, rugs and yarn, which are available for sale. The farm also offers alpaca sales and stud services.
Alpacas are members of the camelid family. They are cousins to the llama. They are graceful, intelligent animals native to the Andean Mountain range of South America, particularly Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. There are two types of alpacas in the USA. They are almost physically identical, and are distinguished by their fiber. The Huacaya (wa-Ki’-ah) is the more common of the two and has a fluffy, extremely fine coat. The Suri (SUR-ee) is more rare and has fiber that is silky and resembles pencil-locks.
Visit the farm on Sept. 24th and learn more about these peaceful creatures and the many environmentally friendly qualities of the alpaca!
